FOOD IN PHUKET: THE BEST ICE CREAM ROLL AND BANANA PANCAKE

I. Kid. You. Not. We’ve tried Thai ice cream rolls and banana pancake in Bangkok and it was horrifying. But the ones that we tried in Phuket —  heavenly, sinful, but worth it.

We chanced upon an ice cream roll cart and a banana pancake cart while we were in Kata, and we decided to try it since we were a little hungry.

Banana pancake:

Banana Nutella Pancake

It’s concept is the same as roti prata, with plain flavoured ‘pancakes’ available. But the most popular one sold here is the nutella banana one.

It was crispy and flavourful, and the stall owner was generous with the banana and nutella for our pancake. Until now, I still can’t forget the crispiness and flavour of it. It’s like a hidden gem in a less popular town! They have many other variations too, ranging from sweet, such as banana nutella and cinnamon sugar, to savoury, such as cheese, egg and sausage. You can eat this as a dessert, snack, or even as a meal! Definitely recommend this if you happen to be in Kata.

Ice Cream Roll (Fried Ice Cream)

I never tried ice cream rolls (aka fried ice cream) before, so the first time I had it, it was in Kata. I always thought ice cream rolls all tasted as good as the one in Kata, so I got it again while I was in Bangkok. But oh boy, was I so wrong. The one in Bangkok was too ice-y, and tasted too artificial… But that’ll be for another post. Back to the Kata ice cream roll that descended from heaven.

It was creamy, thick, NOT ICE-Y, and flavourful — it almost tasted like a gelato. And it’s always so entertaining to watch the owner make your ice cream roll. He will pour milk onto a really cold pan (on a hot summer day, mind you!) and add the topping of your choice. Before the milk freezes over, he will mix in your topping into the ice cream and stir it well on the cold pan. When the ice cream is adequately frozen/cold, it will be spread on the pan using his spatula, and made into rolls.

There are many flavours to choose from, from fruity flavours such as strawberry and banana to brownie and oreo flavour. You will always be spoilt for choice, and it’s always so much fun to watch your ice cream roll being made right in front of your eyes!

Definitely try it on a hot summer’s day (or even if it’s rainy), because it’s something you don’t want to miss when you visit Kata.

Rating: 5/5 stars (haven’t found anything better)
